High-precision ultrasonic measurements were performed to investigate elastic properties of rare-earth cuprate Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4. Remarkable softening was observed in the transverse mode C66 below 12K. The behavior of C66 is understood as a crystal electric field effect on the elastic modulus.
