Shortening of folds in the axial trace direction gave rise to secondary cleavage. Mechanisms for generation of secondary cleavage in preexisting folds are analyzed. The new “translation mechanism” here proposed deforms the incompetent layers. The translation mechanism combined with homogeneous strain explains the secondary cleavage.
