This is the first study to test the role of kinesin-1 in axonal transport within the central nervous system. KLC1 deletion leads to a reduction of Mn2+ transport from CA3 to the septal nuclei. Time lapse MRI of Mn2+ provides a method to measure axonal transport in the living brain.
