This is the first study that focuses on student midwives’ experiences of learning and working abroad. Adapting to a new environment and different culture took time and support from peers, mentors and academic staff in the host university was welcomed. Social media and visits from family and friends helped the students in maintaining contact with their home country. All students gained in competence and confidence to feel empowered in facilitating changes and developing innovative practice upon their return home.
