On the basis of the structural similarities among ergot alkaloids and mediators such as noradrenaline, serotonin and dopamine wide range of their biological effects could be explained. Their effects on immune system are seldom examined. In the literature, lisuride and terguride had positive effect on stress induced decrease of some immune parameters in mice and calves. Another ergot alkaloid, agroclavine, was found to have immunostimulating properties: in vitro it enhanced NK activity, production of IL-2 and interferon gamma.
