Amniocyte cytoplasmic vacuolization is not highly specific for fetal gastroschisis contrary to popular beliefs. Specificity of amniocyte cytoplasmic vacuolization may have been overestimated previously due to the use of placentas from babies with omphalocele as controls. However, sensitivity and specificity of amniocyte vacuolization for gastroschisis are high in placentas from pre-term births.
