Half of the participants experienced emotional communication problems at the start of their relationship. Communication difficulties are often linked to lexical and conceptual limitations in the FL and a lack of emotional resonance. Difficulties typically disappeared in months and the FL could become the language of the heart. Speed and depth of affective socialisation in the FL was linked to gender and personality.
