Microsieves were applied to mimic obstacles in a sparse deterministic ratchet. Application of microsieves in sparse ratchets enhances scale-up of the technology. Pressure distribution was optimized by particle tracking and CFD simulation. Separation performance improved with optimized pressure and flow field. Separation performance approached ideal displacement in new sieve-based device.
