Substrate choice by ovipositing mothers and consequent hatchling behaviour: the exploration sharing hypothesis

Female fruit flies are meticulous in choosing where to lay their eggs.

Mothers reliably choose the egg-laying sites that the larvae would prefer.

It is, therefore, surprising that offspring often promptly leave after hatching.

We find that egg-laying decisions are affected by large-scale features of the patch.

We propose exploration is shared with mothers focusing on larger spatial scales.
