A new combined process, ausforming followed by below-Ms austempering, was applied.

The new process significantly refines bainitic structure in a low-carbon steel.

A superfine bainite with lath thickness down to ∼100 nm is obtained.

Bainitic lath thickness decreases as the ausforming temperature decreases.

Ladder-like bainitic morphology is formed at lower ausforming temperatures.
