Iodine in the feed of cows and in the milk with a view to the consumer’s iodine supply

Milk may be an iodine source for humans, but its magnitude depends on the iodine content of cow feed. When comparing the low-iodine straight feedstuffs with animal requirements, iodine is the most critical trace element and addition is mandatory. There is a good iodine supply via mineral vitamin premixes and total mixed rations to maintain animal´s health and performance. Milk iodine contents lower than expected from the feed iodine, are caused by rapeseed-feed glucosinolates acting as iodine antagonists. In Germany, feed iodine supplementation could be increased to improve the consumer´s iodine supply via milk.
