Small metal hydrides, methylidenes, and methylidynes have been prepared. Photo-isomerizations were commonly observed including reversible conversions. The primary products show a periodic trend; Re and Os produce only methylidynes. Lanthanides generate exclusively CH2-LnF2 with single C-Ln bonds from CH2F2. Thorium produced H3C-Th-H and H2CThH2 from CH4, and Uranium HCUF3 from HCF3.
