In fringe projection profilometry, an adaptive threshold selection method for segmenting background and shadow points is firstly proposed in this paper. Different from the existing automatic methods, the modulation-level histogram, instead of the gray-level histogram, of the image is employed to determine the threshold. A new weighting factor is proposed to improve Otsu’s method, which significantly intensifies the modulation difference between the object pixels and the background/shadow pixels. The proposed method outperforms existing methods either in accuracy, efficiency or automation.
