Obstacles toward unity efficiency of LiNi1-2xCoxMnxO2 (x = 0 ∼ 1/3) (NCM) cathode materials: Insights from ab initio calculations

Lattice distortion, Oxygen evolution, Li-Ni exchange cause degradation of cathode. Ni concentration and Depth of Charge are key factors affecting the degradation. Optimal composition of NCM is within the region of 1/10 < x < 1/4 (50–80% of Ni). Doping is an effect way to alleviate the oxygen evolution at low Ni content. Coating may suppress lattice distortion and Li-Ni exchange at high Ni content.
