δ-catenin links cadherins to GRIP, a GluA2 AMPA receptor subunit synaptic anchor. Mutation of δ-catenin induces neurological disorders including autism. Li+ is used to treat bipolar disorder, but the mechanism is unknown. Li+ elevates synaptic δ-catenin and associated GRIP and GluA2 in neuronal cultures. Li+ increases synaptic GluA2 in vivo, suggesting a therapeutic mechanism of action.
