Children discover very early language is an effective way to communicate. But this idea seems to exclude a certain wide and different group of population who does not develop language normally: mental deficiency.

Characterization of linguistic aspects in persons with mental deficiency is not abundant. A lack of information with respect to language profile in mental deficiency questions the role of linguistics beyond ?normal? language.

In this work I will try to characterize the language of mental deficiency persons with ?good? linguistic abilities taking Bickerton's theories about protolanguage (1990, 2000) into account, including mental deficiency population in his characterization together with primates, children under 3 year of age and children in social extreme isolation circumstances. Bickerton's description lies on structural aspects of language, we also include in his taxonomy pragmatic abilities.

This work takes data obtained from a sample of 8 participants with mental deficiency, ages range from 13 to 16. They were assessed with a wide range of standardized test and spontaneous language natural settings (echological situations).
