A series of cyclic thiourea functionalized dyes containing furan units as the π-linkers were synthesized for DSSCs. Compared with thiophene segment, dye sensitizers with furan π-linkers deliver higher molar extinction coefficient, more efficient electron transfer and longer electron lifetime. Z970 with a furan-thiophene linker gains equivalent conversion efficiency of AZ6 with a bithiophene linker. Furan as the π-linker is a fairly good choice for the design of dye sensitizers.
