Mechanisms of mercury toxicity were investigated in gills of wild fish (Liza aurata). 1H NMR-based metabolomics and multivariate statistical analysis were applied. Hg interfered with ion-osmoregulation, as well with energy and protein metabolism. Vulnerability in gill respiratory activity and antioxidant defence system was observed. The environmental metabolomics is an effective tool in ecotoxicological studies.
