Maize provisioning of Ontario Late Woodland turkeys: Isotopic evidence of seasonal, cultural, spatial and temporal variation
文摘
Late Woodland Ontario peoples managed wild turkeys by provisioning them with maize. Maize provisioning of wild turkeys is unique in North American archaeology. Human/turkey interactions differed between Western Basin and Iroquoian traditions. Isotopic evidence supports ethnohistoric accounts of cold weather hunting. Reasons may include reliable food supply, climate change, ritual/ceremonial activity.
