An inducible male-sterility system has been developed in rice by expressing l-ornithinase (argE) gene. argE-transgenic lines showed male-sterility after N-acetyl-phosphinothricin treatment. Expression of argE gene affects only male gametophyte but not female gametophyte. Normal seeds were obtained from crosses between male-sterile transgenics and control plants.
