The Everglades mangrove forests face external stressors such as upstream hydrological alterations and agricultural activities.
This study estimates the quantity and economic value of the carbon stored in mangrove wetlands of the Everglades National Park (ENP).
Total Organic Carbon storage, 70 to 537 Mg C/ha; unit economic value, $13,859/ha –$23,728/ha; total economic value, $2–$3.4 billion.
The C storage estimates can be a benchmark for evaluating the effects of current of future policies that prevent losses in C stock.
These values are a robust baseline which can be further improved as C sampling expands across the region.
