Soil carbon stocks along a mangrove chronosequence (3–48 yrs old) were studied. Thickness of the pedogenetic layer increased toward a maximum asymptote of ∼45 cm. Along the chronosequence, OC stocks in soils increased from 4 to 107 Mg OC ha−1. Carbon burial rates ranged between 0.72 and 4.77 Mg OC ha−1 yr−1. Age and position of the stand in the intertidal zone influenced OC accumulation.
