Stress is a trigger of depression relapse and impairs performance monitoring. In rMDD, stress impaired frontocingulate activation in an error monitoring task. Greater frontocingulate impairment predicted increased depression at 18 months. Results highlight a mechanism by which stress may trigger future depression.
