The 1998-2001 submarine lava balloon eruption at the Serreta ridge (Azores archipelago): Constraints from volcanic facies architecture, isotope geochemistry and magnetic data
The first in situ HR images of the Serreta eruption area (1998–2001) are presented. A location of the vent source is proposed based on a multidisciplinary approach. The freshest (youngest) lava samples collected in the area may correspond to a post 1998–2001 submarine eruption. Influence of the mantle source feeding the Terceira Island volcanism is evaluated. The new data confirms the small-scale heterogeneity of the Azores mantle source.
