Food production already puts substantial pressure on water resources in many places. Here we calculate the irrigation water required to maximize crop yields globally. Yield gap closure will mean a 146% increase in irrigation water demand. Thus, only countries with abundant freshwater resources should maximize crop yields. Areas prone to water stress should prioritize water use efficiency over production.
