A finite element study on residual stress stability and fatigue damage in high-frequency mechanical impact (HFMI)-treated welded joint

<p id="p0005">Mechanisms affecting fatigue improvement in HFMI-treated joint were investigated.p>
<p id="p0010">Residual stress relaxation was simulated with elastic-plastic FE analysis.p>
<p id="p0015">Full residual stress relaxation was observed for R = 0.5 and an underload of 0.6fy.p>
<p id="p0020">Relative fatigue damage analysis showed benefit from HFMI even in these cases.p>
<p id="p0025">The results indicate that this was due to improved geometry and strain hardening.p>
