HLA-E expression was observed in the extravillous trophoblast, but not in the syncytiotrophoblast. HLA-E expression in the placental tissue of the HIV-1 infected and uninfected women was not affected by the infection. HLA-E expression was not influenced by HIV-1 viral load, CD4+ T cells count and antiretroviral therapy used during pregnancy.
