Minimal degradation of lipid biomarkers occurs in Atacama soils due to hyperaridity. Lipids retain functional groups and unsaturated bonds over geological time periods. Excellent preservation allows paleoenvironmental and paleotaxonomic reconstruction. Hyperarid environments could preserve paleobiological information on Earth and Mars.
