We examined the impact of emotional valence of task unrelated thoughts (TUTs).
Reanalysis of prior studies suggests not all TUTS impair performance.
Negative, not positive, TUTs were related to poorer cognitive task performance.
Neutral TUTs were related to poorer working memory performance but not attention.
