Highly ordered MOF core–shell structures are introduced as chromatography sorbents.

The sorbents are fabricated by a liquid phase epitaxy process in a layer-by-layer fashion.

Columns filled with these sorbents achieve separation of mixtures of phenol derivatives.

We report in-depth simulation of the chromatographic performance of MOF materials.

We discuss strengths and weaknesses of MOFs for analytical and preparative separations.
