Studies on Octopus maya embryos maintained at constant temperatures showed that this phase of the life cycle is highly sensitive to temperature.

Results indicate that there is a thermal limit in 27ºC, above which embryo experience changes in the oxidative system and are not able to recover.

Octopus maya has a potential for monitoring ocean warming at the southern boundary of the Gulf of Mexico.
