A novel type of tunable magnetorheological damper featured by permanent magnets is proposed Damping force of the proposed damper depends on the shape of the housing cylinder and the location of the permanent magnet attached to the moving piston. A special switching mechanism for the direction change of the piston motion is made for up and down piston motions. The effectiveness of the proposed MR damper is validated from both simulation and experiment.
