Pharmaceutical marketing regulations were associated with lower prescribing rates. New drug penetration was 39%–83% lower in states with pharmaceutical gift bans. Gift limits and disclosure policies were also associated with reduced prescribing. Peers were an alternate channel by which doctors could learn about beneficial drugs.
