We examined how 62 salt diapirs in southern Iran influence the adjacent aquifers.
45% of the studied diapirs (28 of 62) have no impact on groundwater quality.
The remaining 55% of diapirs increase groundwater salinity by 3 mechanisms.
The main mechanisms include: surface, subsurface and indirect impacts.
We offer probable remediation methods to decrease groundwater salinity.
