Enhancement of acidogenic fermentation for volatile fatty acid production from food waste: Effect of redox potential and inoculum

Anaerobic and aerobic sludge were inoculated to food waste fermentation for VFA production under limited aeration condition.

The maximal VFA yield was achieved at ORP in the range of −100 to −200 mV with anaerobic sludge as an inoculum.

High protein degradation and VFA yield under limited aeration conditions were achieved.

The low VFA production from food waste at pH 6.0 under anaerobic conditions was not caused by methanogenesis.
