Filtration resistance of alginate solution shows unimodal pattern with Ca2+increase. Maximal specific filtration resistance (SFR) of alginate gel is extremely high. Micromorphology of the formed gel is related with the filtration behaviors. Flory-Huggins mechanism governs the extremely high SFR of the alginate gel. Initial calcium binding in multichains is key mechanism governing gel morphology.
