Glucocorticoid receptors (GR) mediate glucocorticoid action at the cellular level. GR polymorphisms can increase sensitivity or resistance to glucocorticoids, resulting in varying effects in different individuals. Effects of GR mutations on metabolic syndrome and psychotic depression are reviewed.
