Monkeys demonstrated metacognition by avoiding difficult perceptual and memory tests. Performance generalized from perceptual to memory tests suggesting a shared mechanism. Results indicate control of the decline test response by private cognitive states. Testing of a large group of monkeys revealed considerable individual differences.
