Oriented trails of micro-to-nanosized carbon inclusions have been identified in garnet.

Inclusions consist of graphite, diamond and metastable carbon allotropes.

Co-precipitation of garnet and metastable carbon allotropes is proposed.

Disordered carbon likely represents the precursor for diamond formation.

This report represents a new occurrence of diamond formed at low-T conditions.
