The gasotransmitters H2S, NO and CO all inhibit cytochrome c oxidase.

At low levels H2S can also act as a substrate for mitochondrial respiration.

Bioenergetic effects depend on availability of H2S and its interplay with NO and CO.

H2S synthesis by cystathionine β-synthase is effectively inhibited by CO and NO.

These newly discovered regulatory mechanisms are herein reviewed.
