Designing an in-vitro gas profiling system for human faecal samples

A portable, low-cost and continuous sensing technology for profiling colonic gases from in-vitro fecal fermentation is proposed.

The technology relies on anaerobic gas sensing in a regulated pressure incubation chamber, mimicking the colon environment.

The performance of the system was evaluated using fecal samples of healthy humans.

The effect of different gas mixtures in the headspace was investigated and the ideal mixture was defined.
