Zebra mussel hemocyte functionalities decreased after 21 h ex vivo exposure to Cd. Phagocytic activity was the most sensitive cellular marker to cadmium exposure. Sensitivity of hemocyte activities to cadmium is cell type-dependent. Hyalinocytes and blast-like cells were more sensitive to cadmium than granulocytes.
