Current research and previous findings on periosteal pathophysiology are summarized. Microcirculatory reactions assessed by intravital imaging techniques are discussed. Clinically-relevant animal models of orthopedic-trauma interventions are presented. Microcirculatory characteristics in axial and appendicular bones are compared. Differences in the reactions to treatment modalities (bisphosphonates) are outlined.
