The endoplasmatic reticulum (ER) is shaped and coupled to microtubules by superfamily of reticulons.
Reticulons can both induce and feel high curcvatures of membranes through wedge shaped hydrophobic domains.
The ER can form extended networks of tubes which can extend to the tips of axons.
The connectivity of the tubular network is controlled by atlastin: a new class of fusion proteins.
