Kimberlite pipes exist on deeply eroded shields in association with root-zones of en echelon dike complexes. Dike trends are controlled by reactivated paleo-sutures from Mesozoic oceanic transform faults to Precambrian flexures. Ilmenite only has survived as a potential kimberlitic indicator mineral under extreme tropical weathering. Pandanus candelabrum is a new geo-botanical indicator of kimberlite pipes in Liberia. Micro-diamonds confirm that the redox state of ilmenite is a useful proxy for the preservation of macro-diamonds.
