A Cu NCs-based fluorescent probe for detecting Hg2+ has been developed.

The probe is easily prepared and displays good sensitivity and selectivity to Hg2+.

The Cu NCs promise high quantum yield and an excitation-independent FL behavior.

Successful applicability in water and food samples.
