New challenges are associated with the degradation of CO in extended bioremediation. Without PBB, fungal activities decrease after 15 d, thereby reducing degradation. PBB is performed to maintain fungal co-culture activities. After PBB, C12O, MnP, and laccase exhibited 2–80-fold higher activities. After PBB, the degradation of asphaltene may continue, even in extended remediation.
