A novel high-performance mixed membrane finite element for the analysis of inelastic structures

The analysis of inelastic structures is addressed through a unified Hu-Washizu type formulation. A novel high-performance eight-node quadrilateral mixed finite element is proposed. Strain interpolation is assumed to be discontinuous, piecewise-constant over suitable element subdomains. A robust and efficient iterative algorithm is used for the element state determination. Mixed formulation stability is successfully assessed by a reliable numerical test.
