A new computational model for axonal growth is proposed. This model links growth and mechanics with separate compartments for axoplasm, and cortical membrane. Growth, collapse and static axonal states are found, as reported in literature. Gradients in polymerization rates of microtubules contribute to axonal turning. The contractility of the cortical membrane plays an important role in axonal steering.
