Towards stochastic discrete element modelling of spherical particles with surface roughness: A normal interaction law

A first attempt to establish a stochastic discrete element modelling framework for particles with surface roughness. Developed a normal contact interaction law based on the Greenwood and Williamson model. Presented two non-dimensional forms of the model that have a substantial impact on the computational efficiency. Proposed a Newton–Raphson iterative procedure to obtain the contact force with surface roughness parameters. Addressed in detail all the key computational components of the procedure. Derived an empirical formula as a new normal interaction law for spheres with surface roughness.
